- [Tappan, NY](https://realantiquewood.com/portfolio/tappan-ny/): \
Historic Home in a Historic Town: The Bogert House c\. 1810\
The Bogert House, dating to circa 1810, stands as a testament to early American craftsmanship in the heart of the historic town of Tappan, New York\. When the current owner and avid preservationist undertook its restoration, the goal was clear: honor the house’s history while thoughtfully adapting it for modern use\.
Early in the project, the owner had removed the original flooring and hoped to repurpose it rather than discard such irreplaceable material\. What was needed was guidance on how to do so creatively, but still responsibly\. Our first step was a site visit\. We walked the property together, examined the existing materials, and began brainstorming ways to reuse as much of the original bones of the house as possible\.
After the initial visit, the conversation expanded beyond flooring\. We discussed the potential of utilizing some of the home’s original structural timbers as well—joists, studs, and hewn beams that still held tremendous character and value\. With a plan forming, we carefully loaded all salvaged materials and transported them to our shop for processing\.
Every piece was de\-nailed, kiln\-dried to ensure it was sterilized, and reworked with preservation in mind\. The original flooring, measuring over one inch thick, was a true stand\-out in that it still had plenty of life left in it\! We preserved its patina, allowing the historic surface to become the new top side once reinstalled\.
Several of the original joists were milled and fabricated into beam wraps, stair treads, and other custom components\. In the conference room, hand\-hewn timbers were milled flat on one side and repurposed as a decorative ridge beam and rafters\. Original joists were transformed into hollow ridge beams and then further milled into rafters, maintaining the visual language of early roof framing in the offices\.
Once the required quantity of flooring had been produced, the remaining joists were resawn into paneling for the office ceilings, creating the appearance of original roof sheathing and reinforcing the building’s historic narrative\. Original wall studs were also milled into usable lumber, from which custom barn doors were meticulously crafted\.
Both the owner and our team share a purist mindset when it comes to preservation\. That shared philosophy allowed our process to be trusted from start to finish\. This project was not only a successful exercise in historic reuse, but also a genuinely fun collaboration and one that allowed us to fully flex our material management muscles while giving new life to 200\-year\-old wood\.

- [Brooklyn, NY](https://realantiquewood.com/portfolio/mixed-hardwood-floor-install-brooklyn-ny/): \\Mixed Hardwood Flooring Installation Services\\
If you’re familiar with our work, you’re almost certainly familiar with our harvest mixed hardwood\. It’s an incredibly versatile material, which is why we use it often across a wide range of residential projects\. In this case, it was selected for the floors of a residential Brooklyn brownstone, where its variation in tone and grain helped bring depth and character to the space\. The natural inconsistencies in the wood allow the flooring to feel organic and layered rather than uniform, which is especially important in older homes where architectural details deserve to be complemented, not overshadowed\. Despite the popularity of the material, this project was anything but ordinary, thanks to the level of hands\-on craftsmanship involved from start to finish\.
In addition to supplying the hardwood materials for this project, we also installed the flooring ourselves\. This allowed us to control every detail of the process, from board selection and layout to the final finish\. Careful attention was paid to plank orientation and spacing to ensure a natural visual flow throughout the home\. Once the boards were down, we hand\-scraped the edges where each board meets, a traditional technique that cannot be replicated by machines\. This process softens transitions between planks and introduces subtle grooves and marks that give the floor a lived\-in, time\-worn feel\. Hand\-scraped hardwood flooring is especially well\-suited to historic homes, where warmth and authenticity are just as important as durability and long\-term performance\.
To finish the floors, we first applied a neutral stain to bring the natural tones of the mixed hardwood to life without overpowering the material\. This step enhances contrast while allowing the grain to remain the focal point\. We then added a layer of wax, applied in an old\-school manner similar to how a janitor might wax a school’s tiled floors\. The wax acts as both a polish and a protective seal, enhancing sheen while helping to guard against stains, preserve the finish, and minimize the appearance of everyday wear such as scratches or small dings over time\. Over time, this finish can be refreshed rather than replaced, making it a practical choice for busy urban homes\.

- [Hand Hewn Beams and Fireplace Mantels in Leonia, NJ](https://realantiquewood.com/portfolio/hand-hewn-beams-and-fireplace-mantels-nj-home/): Although we did not provide the original wood flooring in this home in Leonia, New Jersey, it played an important role in shaping our overall design approach\. The existing floors set a strong visual foundation, and our goal was to introduce architectural wood elements that would complement their tone, grain, and natural character\. In the kitchen, we created and installed a set of hand\-hewn white pine beams, carefully selected so their color and texture aligned seamlessly with the flooring\. The result is a cohesive, balanced look that feels intentional rather than over\-designed\.
That same attention to detail carried into the den, where a hand\-hewn fireplace mantel was crafted to mirror the warmth and rustic character of the surrounding space\. By matching the mantel’s finish and proportions to the beams and floors, we were able to create a consistent design language across the home’s main living areas\. These kinds of custom wood details help tie rooms together visually, especially in open or semi\-open floor plans common in many New Jersey homes\.
In the basement, our work expanded further\. We provided and installed additional beams, another fireplace mantel, and a custom set of doors as part of a two\-phase project\. During the first phase, we replaced the home’s original back doors with silver siding barn doors, transforming the area into a functional playroom while maintaining a rustic, reclaimed aesthetic\. We also installed a hand\-hewn mantel above the stone fireplace, adding warmth and texture to what had previously been a more utilitarian space\.
Phase two focused on completing the basement’s tray ceiling\. To achieve the desired architectural depth, we fabricated a series of L\-shaped beam wraps designed to conceal existing soffits and ductwork\. This process required combining multiple pieces to achieve the correct scale and fit, ensuring the beams appeared solid and intentional once installed\. The remaining ceiling beams were then installed to complete the trayed effect, giving the basement the same level of craftsmanship and visual interest found throughout the rest of the home\.
